But the city’s Ford workers, politicians and businesses remain optimistic about the matter. “We knew this plant closing was coming and we’ve been preparing for quite some time,” Wixom Mayor Michael McDonald said. “A long time ago, we decided we need to diversify the economy.” McDonald said Ford taught the city to always be innovative, and never to depend on just Ford.
It’s a lesson the city has learned well. Fifteen years ago, the Ford plant made up half of Wixom’s tax revenue. Now, it’s only eleven percent, about million, of the city’s revenue, said City Manager J. Michael Dornan. The situation accelerates like a bullet, the kind that EBC Redstuff could not contain.
End of half a decade life
From the beginning, the plant just off I-96 was routinely hailed for its cutting-edge technology, its quality and productivity. A decade ago, Wixom was expanded, becoming Ford’s largest car assembly plant in North America at 4.7 million square feet.
At its peak in 1988, the plant produced 280,659 vehicles a year. According to Autodata Corp., this year, it will make less than 40,000. Ford sold a meager 3,712 Lincoln Town cars in April, a slide of 1,115 from the same period in 2006.
“This plant will idle May 31, but its legacy will never die,” Mario DiLisio, chairman of the United Auto Workers Local 36, said during a tour of the plant Wednesday. Wixom hourly workers praised Ford’s generous buyout packages. “Yes, it’s kind of bittersweet moment, but the real good news is that everyone I know will land on their feet,” said Alonzo Smith, 41, who will transfer to a Dearborn Ford facility.
Working at Ford Wixom is a family affair for Smith, something that is not rare among Ford hourly workers. His father, James Smith, moved from Alabama to Michigan for a prized factory job and spent 34 years at Ford Wixom. Alonzo Smith started at Ford Wixom after he got out of the Marine Corps in 1988. He met his wife, Stefanie Harris, at the Wixom plant, and has a brother there, too.
Still, he wants more for others in the family. “We want our children to continue their education. It’s a great career, but to expect that to keep continuing for generation after generation is not something I want.”
Wixom without Ford
The city of Wixom is now concentrating on a future without Ford. For more than a decade, the city has worked to attract small industrial companies, including at least six that have set up headquarters here. They include National Liquid Blasting Corp., which employs about 300 workers. General Motors Corp. powertrain and design services units also are in Wixom, having 300 employees.
“We’ve been open to small entrepreneurs who need just about 2,000 square feet to small industrial companies that need 10,000 square feet,” McDonald said. “I can’t think of one, really, that relies solely or much on the Ford Wixom plant for its business. Yet, there will be some pain. “Of course, we are going to take a hit,” McDonald said. “I worry about a lot of the restaurants and the dry cleaners who relied on those Ford workers for their business.”
If things go as planned, Wixom city officials estimate the direct tax hit from the loss of Ford Wixom will be 0,000 to 0,000 in the next five years. Several developers said Wixom can adapt quickly. “I know a lot of communities in Michigan who wish they could perform as good as Wixom right now,” said Rob Hughes, a vice president at Colliers International, a real estate firm. “I worry about the Quizno’s, the Dunkin’ Donuts and the Wendy’s there,” Hughes said. “But they are in a great location, right there in the middle of western Oakland County growth and they continue to attract high-tech facilities.
He added, “I’ve seen a number of former auto plants in the region, in far less desirable locations, that have been redeveloped, so I think a lot of people believe that plant will not be empty forever.”

After years of being one of the largest and most renowned automaker, it seems like Ford the major stockholder of Mazda the manufacturer of Mazda cornering light is finally at its brink. It is no secret that Ford has been facing financial problems for years now brought about by products that failed to sell well in the market not to mention the frequent changes in the management stature.
Things have been going from bad to worst for the automaker that finally shareholders of Ford together with the heirs of Henry Ford are confronted with the prospect of finally relinquishing the control of the company whether they like it or not than to lose everything at the end.
The company has been lending just to meet the company’s financing needs and right now it has exhausted all its resources and will need again fresh investment to pay for its factories, to launch new models, and to push through with its expansion plan for worldwide markets. The question is: Are there still investors and lenders that would risk additional billions knowing the family’s dismal history as controlling shareholder? However, the margin of defeat was narrower this year compared to earlier years. The results show that 45 percent of the non-family voters would like to see the family out of power.
For the 104 years of Ford it has always been controlled by the Ford family with the addition of some hired hands. And it is not only once that the family has summarily fired or forced out non-family chief executive officers.
In the most recent happening at Ford the family has ease out one of it own. After disappointing financial results, Bill Ford Jr. last September have gave up his position as CEO in favor of Allan Mulally who is a senior Boeing Co. executive recruited to try and help the automaker regain financial health. On the other hand Bill Ford Jr. has remained chairman.
CEO Mullally optimistic in spite of crisis
After his appointment as new CEO, Mulally has swung into action pledging most of Ford’s assets to borrow .5 billion in cash. And because auto making is a lead-time business, it would take at least two to three years before Mulally could see the results of all his efforts. Hopefully Ford’s cash hoard will last during that period and of course it is also expected that the automaker should gain profit before it run out completely of cash.
The current price of Ford’s stock is .78 giving it a market value of .5 billion, which is a little more than that of Harley-Davidson Inc. The price of the automaker is down by 75 percent from its peak in 1999, this can be seen as little more than a call option on the part of the company avoiding bankruptcy until 2010. Despite the crisis that the company is in right now CEO Mulallly is optimistic that the automaker will be profitable again. Ford has obtained a net loss of .6 billion last year and 2 million in the first quarter of this year which makes me wonder for how long CEO Mulally can keep up its positive facade.

Bill Ford aged 50 with his cousin Edsel 58, his father Bill Sr., 82, plus a handful of Fords—all have held senior positions at Ford or on its board. They together with dozens of other family members also owned super-voting Class B shares in a family trust. For those who are not aware of what Class B stock is it represents 40 percent of the shareholders vote with less than 4 percent of the equity.
Class B shares are owned by family members only. In case no family member wants to buy B shares these shares they are put up for sale where they are converted to Class A shares and ultimately sold for cash. When enough B shares are converted, the family loses a proportion of control.
Last April 21, Ford met with investment bankers Joseph Perella and Peter Weinberg in Dearborn, Michigan. Mulally spoke at the meeting which was held to brief family members of whom mostly aren’t close to the company’s operations. The meeting was private although Steve Hamp, Bill Ford Jr.’s brother-in-law, later told Detroit News that the concept of bringing in an outsider as an adviser was not agreed on by everybody saying that it was not yet time.
According to David Cole, Chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, “As most companies go down the road in generations, they have difficulties and that’s why they sell out. Don’t think the Fords are different. Do you ride out the troubles or get out? What do you do?”
Not all Fords are worried about the imminent bankruptcy of Ford Motors like for instance Bill Ford Dr., owner of the Detroit Lions, and Elena Ford, 40 daughter of the Greek shipping tycoon—these are Fords that are rich even without owning a piece of the automaker. Both are now pushing through with their turnaround plan to arrest their decreasing share market and sales. Detroit-based General Motors took a step which is currently paying off – a move that Ford has not made or has not made yet. General Motors’ Saturn Division is not as popular as it is today, but under General Motors’ turnaround plan, the brand has become one of the fastest growing auto brands in the United States auto market.
General Motors has revitalized the Saturn lineup by partnering it with German automaker Opel. The latter is also a subsidiary of the Detroit automaker. By infusing European styling to the new lineup of the Saturn brand, General Motors successfully attracted the attention of many consumers and auto journalists and critics as well. In fact, the Saturn Aura which was designed in Europe is the reigning North American Car of the Year.
The working relationship between Opel and Saturn did not only give birth to the revitalized Aura but also to other new Saturn auto models. The new Vue has been receiving lots of praises for its new look and better performance – the result of Opel’s collaboration. The working relationship between the two automakers has been beneficial for Saturn, not only for the European designs of their autos but also of their performance. Now, General Motors’ European connection includes Saab and Vauxhall aside from Opel. Although these European automakers cannot be regarded as mediocre, they would pale in comparison to Ford’s European connection. FoMoCo still has Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo in its folds plus it still has shares in the ultra luxury brand Aston Martin.
If Ford emulates General Motors’ initiative in bringing European styling to American cars, surely, the automaker can attract more consumers to their showrooms. With Volvo styling alone, Ford’s American offerings can be at par with the revitalized Saturn lineup. In terms of performance, Jaguar and Aston Martin can provide good support for the automaker’s American offerings.
But with Jaguar and Land Rover almost out of Ford’s door, would an Opel/Saturn-like partnership be possible for FoMoCo? That is a question that many in the auto industry are still pondering on and only Ford can answer. Should Ford emulate General Motors or take its own route towards profitability? Emulating General Motors might gain Ford more attention, after all, the Ford Fusion Challenge has been adopted by General Motors for the Saturn Aura.

A worldwide recall for all Model T manufactured and are still in existence was announced recently by Ford the producer of high quality Volvo vent visor. The said recall does not involve any safety issues but is part of the fun to celebrate the 2008 Model T Ford Centennial T Party which is to be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds and Exposition Center in Richmond, Indiana.
The event will last for a week running from July 21 to 26, 2008 and has a theme the “party of the century” for the “car of the century”. Around 15 million Model T cars were built between 1908 and 1927. It is estimated that there are still at least 500,000 out of the 15 million that survive. 1,500 out of the 500,000 surviving T models have reached as far Australia, England, and Norway. Next July it is also expected in East Central Indiana to celebrate the Ford Model T’s 100th birthday which will become the largest gathering of Model Ts since they rolled off the factory.
It is the Model T Ford Club of America that will host the Centennial T Party that will take its visitors back to the time when Model T was new. As part of the event are other events such as:

• a mock “recall inspection”,
• driving and challenge games, a swap meet,
• a series of Model T road tours along the Old National Road and to historic towns, a vintage baseball game,
• a period clothing store and fashion show

It would be equipped with An Interceptor V8 engine and be capable of attaining a speed of over 100 miles per hour.
Although designed to compete with the Corvette, it wasn’t a true sports car. Ford conceived it as a personal luxury car.
For some reason, they encountered difficulty in creating a name for the car so Crusoe offered a prize, a 0 suit, to anyone who submitted an acceptable name. A stylist, Alden Giberson, entered a list with Thunderbird included.
The idea behind the name is controversial. Some sources say it was named for the Native American god of rain and prosperity. Palm Life Magazine stated the name came from an ultra exclusive housing district. It is also reported that Giberson got the idea when he witnessed an illusion of a bird struck by lightening during a storm.
The Thunderbird first met the American public at the Detroit Auto Show in February of 1954. However, it was not available at dealers until October of 1954. This model was a two-door convertible equipped with a V8 engine that could cruise between 110 and 120 miles per hour. The standard top was fiberglass but a fabric convertible top was an option. Featuring four way powered seats and push button interior doors, the T-bird was actually a small personal luxury car not a sports car.
However, it definitely appealed to the American public at the time and in the first ten days of sale, dealers received 3,500 orders. The total sales for 1955 amounted to 16,155 as Ford realized their goal of surpassing the Corvette.
Later however, owners of the ‘Classic’ would complain about the lack of a back seat and small trunk. This would lead to modifications and a new generation of T-birds however, the “Little Bird” remains an American icon.

From our experiences growing up, we all have different ideas on how to make money in the world.
But even with these ideas, most of the times starting out, we have no idea if they will work out or not. We’re afraid of failing so we let are dreams disappear and settle for the next best thing.
This type of approach is common in most people that begin to face adversity.
Realize that even with every failure we make, it is a lesson that we can learn from that will eventually lead you towards your goal only if you make the decision to be persistent enough to make it through the end.

Here are five people, each who went bankrupt, and made it to success despite failing numerous times.
Henry Heinz
Heinz began by selling vegetables to his community as a kid since his family tended a garden. He was successful in doing that, and then narrowed it down to horseradish, the best horseradish in town.
With the goal in mind that someday he would build a business selling the things he had a passion for, he and a friend created the Heinz Noble & Company selling horseradish.
In 1875 however, the company went bankrupt as a result of not being able to pay his workers due to the popularity of horseradish, driving the price of it down.
Despite being in a great amount of debt, Heinz didn’t give up. He started another company called F & J Heinz, this time producing tomato sauce. The company manufactured quality ketchup and became an instant success, allowing Heinz to recover from bankruptcy and turning his company into a multimillion dollar corporation.
Because of his persistence of turning his idea into reality, today we enjoy one of the most delicious and quality ketchups – H & J Heinz Company Ketchup.
Milton Hershey
Hershey started out working for a printing press, but realized that type of work didn’t suit him.
Afterwards, he worked for a candy maker for four years, and developed a passion for different types of candy, realizing this time that distributing quality candy to the world would be his dream.
He started his first candy-making business in Philadelphia, but it failed. He then started another candy-making business in Chicago, but that failed as well, and one in New York, which also failed again.
Doing all of this caused him to go bankrupted, and his family had a hard time helping him pay some of the debts that he owed for his early attempts. Under a lot of pressure and criticism, he decided not to give up.
He created one more company called the Lancaster Caramel Company, this time using a caramel recipe he had learned from his past hoping that this recipe would work. It finally did and people loved his caramel chocolates.
From the money he had earned, he then went onto to create the Hershey Company using fresh milk available to him to create milk chocolates.
Today, we enjoy that very milk chocolate formula from one of the most delicious milk chocolate bars ever created – the Hershey Chocolate Bar.
Henry Ford
Ford started out with the reputation of a watch repair man. Having a talent and always ambitious to fix things and make them better, Ford began experimenting with gasoline engines. He created his first automobile called the Fordricycle and kept on thinking of new ways to improve it.
His dream was to be able to offer a reliable and affordable automobile to every American. He then started a business around cars when the Detroit Automobile Company was launched.
The company failed however, as the cars was of low quality and the cost too much.
He tried again with the Ford and Malcomson, Ltd. but failed again when sales were too slow and the owners of the car parts demanded their first payment from Ford, since he was using their parts to make cars.
On the brink of going bankrupt, Ford tried his best to persuade the owners to join his company. They finally gave in.
With a third attempt, he created the Ford Motor Company. Within a couple of years, Ford and company came up with higher wages, better production with the creation of the assembly line, and better cars, including the Model T and Model A.
He was able to turn the company into a multimillion dollar corporation and provide one of the most reliable and affordable brand of cars that we have today – Ford Cars.
Walt Disney
Disney started out working with what he loved to do, draw, and got paid drawing pictures for his neighbor, a retired doctor. He carried his love for drawing until high school, where in between, he was influenced by motion pictures.
He wanted to become an artist, drawing comic strips for the newspaper, but no one wanted to hire him.
It was until his brother gave him an opportunity to work at an art studio. He took the opportunity, where he created ads for newspapers, magazines, and movie theatres.
After the art studio job was over, Disney worked for the Kansas City Film Ad Company making commercials based on cutout animations. He then created an animation studio that produced animation called Laugh-O-Grams, successfully airing at a local theatre.
Problems arose however when Disney’s Laugh-O-Gram studio was loaded with too my debt because of the salaries he had to pay to all his employees.
As a result of all the debt Disney owed, the studio went completely bankrupt and he was left with nearly nothing.
He decided to move, despite all his debt, to pursue his dream of producing great animation to the world. From Hollywood, California, he was able to create his greatest works and his company went on to become a multi-million dollar corporation.
Since then, we have enjoyed all the works that Disney has given to us, from his cartoons and movies, to his theme parks and hotels.
Donald Trump
Finally, we have Mr. Trump. This ambitious man started out working after college to creating many million dollar projects that involved real estate.
He was very successfully early in his career buying and creating million dollar projects and eventually selling them to make million dollar profits. These included apartment complexes, hotels, convention centers, and casinos.
However, during the recession of 1989, he was unable to cover the debt of casinos, especially the one billion dollar Taj Mahal.
By 1991, he had lost control of his most valuable assets including the Trump Plaza Hotel and declared bankruptcy, being 0 million dollars in debt.
Taking a decade to recover from his debt, he eventually was able to erase it all through incredible deal makings and a line of other successful projects.
Trump is now not only a billionaire who owns many famous hotels, casinos, and real estate property, but also a well known celebrity with the popular reality TV show, The Apprentice.
Despite each of these people going into financial troubles, debt, company problems, and bankruptcy, they were still persistent enough to make their business work out – Heinz with produce, Hershey with candy, Ford with automobiles, Disney with animation, and Trump with real estate.
We are all used to their product names now, and even though they are all famous, there was a time where they were just normal, common, everyday people.
The only difference between what separated them and everybody else who failed in business was that they had big dreams and decided to be persistent enough to make those dreams happen.
You may be facing difficult times right now or your business is not going your way you planned, but just remember that these five people were able to come out of adversity despite bad starts, low sales, and even total bankruptcies.
Take a lesson in persistence from successful people. They don’t just become successful right away. It may take a couple months or it may take years and years of trying.
And even when the world is giving you all the signs to stop, if you just say to yourself, “No, I will make this happen no matter what until the very end,” eventually, you’ll see that it will.
